April and the Extraordinary World Review

In a very different 1941 France, a teenage girl named April looks for clues about her missing parents, two of the many scientists who have mysteriously disappeared over the course of 70 years.

april_twisted_world

I didn’t know much about April and the Extraordinary World ahead of time, but the steampunk aspects, animation style and strong reviews piqued my interest. What I found was a fantastic adventure that built logically and gradually from an initial twist, like all great science fiction. April’s journey is a joy to tag along with, complimenting a tense dramatic underlying story with the perfect touches of humor.  There are some cliched elements towards the end, but even they fit beautifully into the overall narrative.

Equally impressive to the story are the evocative visuals that bring April’s tale to life. She inhabits an incredibly imaginative and realized steampunk world, which is just overflowing with inspired and unique designs.

I adore movies that impart a true sense of wonder, and April and the Extraordinary World has it in spades. This French movie is reminiscent of some of the great Japanese animated features I’ve seen, and an easy recommendation for any animation and/or steampunk fans.

Psyren Volume 16 Review

This is the final volume of a layered, intricate story that has been carefully built since the beginning. There’s no point starting here – this really must be read from volume 1.

This review will contain thoughts on the series as a whole and will be as spoiler free as I can make it.

psyren14

No detailed summary this time. It’s simply the final showdown with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Cliched as that sounds, the specifics of Ageha’s journey and the world of Psyren make this gripping and compelling to the last page. The various distinct, conflicting agendas intersect perfectly in the climax to provide a finale that is fitting and consistent with the series that preceded it.

On the critical side, a ridiculous amount is packed into the last couple of volumes and they do feel a little rushed. Another volume or two for this last arc would not have been out of place. There are also a few open questions and subplots I wish got a bit more development. That said, these are minor issues. Every major plot thread is addressed and the resolutions are character-driven and satisfying. A couple things wrap up a little too neatly, but I’d much rather that than too many loose ends.

The best part about this finale is that Iwashiro still had a couple of surprises to share without anything coming out of left field. Having logical progression and good foreshadowing without telegraphing everything is very difficult and the repeated success achieved in Psyren is one of the things I love most about the series.

A fitting end to a fantastic manga. Psyren tried hard at every stage to transcend the very cliches and genre trappings it embraced and became a phenomenal journey to tag along with.

Highly recommended.

Today’s Cerberus Volume 1 Review

After being bitten by a strange dog as a child, Chiaki was cursed with a loss of emotions and the inability to truly smile. Eight years later, and Cerberus is back in his life, but in a rather unexpected way…

cerberus1

I enjoyed this initial offering in this offbeat series. It’s amusing despite a mix of numerous well established tropes, and the key is how they’re used. The mythological angle is a nice twist to explain both the multiple personalities and the dog-girl aspects. Even though the leads all fill stereotypical roles there are subtle touches that add depth and amusement. I particularly like Roze and the various story threads connected to her.

While nothing revolutionary nor new, Today’s Cerberus is a fun read and has a lot of potential. Looking forward to continuing it.

Japan Crate April 2016 Review

April is here and so is another box of snacks and treats from Japan.

IMG_9439

As usual Japan Crate includes a booklet / mini-manga that explains what everything is and has various additional content. A small plastic otter from AMUSE called Kawauso No Kotsume is the promised “make-up item” for past shipping delays. Whatever. On to the edibles.

The Excellent

Puru Mocchi Grape is the best of the three gummies this month, with both tart and sweet flavor overtones. I also enjoyed the variety, flavors and texture of the Fruit Shop Gummy  a lot.

IMG_9443

Sherbert Pero Cola  was described as a combination of Fun Dip and Pop Rocks, and that’s pretty accurate. The hard power style lollipop is cola flavored and the dipping powder designed to add a fizzy taste/texture. A unique, tasty candy.

The chocolate treats continue to shine, as the airy Caplicocot chocolate hearts and the panda decorated Sakupan Giant Wafer chocolate cookie were easily my overall favorites this month.

IMG_9442

The Decent

We got another version of Fue Ramune this month. They have consistency similar to mint lifesavers (though “break” easier when chewed) and taste strongly of the named drink. They are shaped to create a whistling sound for added amusement. 123 Green Apple Gum is exactly as the title implies, and fine for what it is.

Rock, Paper, Scissor Gummy has been sent before, but it’s still amusing and the cola flavor keeps it high in my estimation.

IMG_9441

Chip Star Ebikoubashi and Calbee Shrimp Chips both feature the unique Japanese snack flavor. The former have the consistency of Pringles and are a nice variation. I’ve had the latter before, but not in the Hot Garlic flavor I received (there were four possible). Good inclusions here.

IMG_9440

The Premium drink was Pineapple Soda. Nice, light soda that tastes as advertised.

IMG_9444

Waku Waku Zoo Animal DIY is one of the best DIY’s they’ve included.

The strawberry and lemon “doughs” included were didn’t require any added water or mixing, which was nice. Just take them out of the package and place into the molds as desired. Add the lollipop sticks and close the molds for a few seconds and they make cutely shaped gummy lollipops they have a good, chewy texture.

IMG_9487

There was enough dough to make two “batches” (four lollipops) and experiment with the flavor combinations a bit. Very nice overall.

The Meh

Wow, Such Banana?! is supposedly back by popular demand. It’s a banana shaped/flavored marshmallow treat filled with chocolate, if you can call a tiny thread running through the center “filled with.” The chocolate was tastable though and this wasn’t bad but I personally didn’t need it repeated so it gets a meh this time around, especially as one of the few Premium exclusives.

Conclusion

Good batch this month, with numerous original and varied snacks. I am getting a bit disillusioned with the Premium upgrades though, as they’ve decreased in number and are now containing repeats. The good news is they’ve just announced upgrades to the number of items and inclusion of brand name snacks starting next month (with Japanese Oreos).

This was the last crate of my subscription and I’ll likely have to stop soon due to budgetary restrictions, but I’m continuing at least one more month to check out the promised changes. I’m still enjoying Japan Crate a great deal overall a year into my experience with them.

Saki Volume 1 Review

After years of playing every New Year with her family, who’d take all her holiday money if she lost and get mad if she won, Saki doesn’t care for Mahjong at all. But when a friend drags her into the school’s Mahjong club for a game, they notice something extremely interesting about how she plays…

saki1

Saki is a full blown sports manga that happens to be about a board game. Several well known cliches of the genre are already apparent in both characters and premise. There’s nothing wrong with this, but the lack of framework for the game that is at the heart of the story pulls the impact out of these well established techniques.

I have no previous knowledge of Mahjong, which unfortunately made this impossible to fully follow. There are footnotes sometimes, but they don’t really help and often only emphasize that what’s happening is difficult. For example, “mixed triple chow” is explained as “three identical chows in three different suits.” Guess that would help if they ever told me what a chow was. Later the “all simple” part of an “all simple pinfu” is explained without defining “pinfu.”

And a lot of the time they don’t even footnote things. “Can you dodge my richi and change a 40-minipoint and 3-han hand to a 70-minipoint and 2-han hand?” is gibberish to me. The reader’s told that the chances of that are < 0.1%, but that’s the only way any of the “drama” of the games is conveyed – by explicitly telling the reader “hey, what’s about to happen is hard to do!” over and over. Hard to invest in the action that way.

The characters are somewhat  interesting so far, but again do fit into standard roles for this type of manga which holds them back since the formula isn’t working right.

The idea behind Saki is decent and it’s not bad overall, but it’s not compelling either. I’m in no rush to continue with volume 2.

Sci-Fi Block April 2016 Review

Let’s see how April’s box of science fiction and pop culture related collectibles turned out.

IMG_9468

While I’ve seen similar designs, this month’s t-shirt featuring Sci-Fi Spaceship Silhouettes is quite well done. Can definitely see myself wearing this.

IMG_9469

A second clothing item was part of this month’s block in the form of Star Wars Ankle Socks. Five different designs in the pack, and there were two different possible packs. Amusing.

IMG_9474

Like last month, there was a “classic” style action figure included. This time it was one of three Funko Reaction: Firefly figures: Mal, Kaylee, or Wash. The fact that Wash came with tiny dinosaur accessories amuses me to no end.

IMG_9471

My favorite thing this month is easily the Star Wars Projector Pen. It projects an awesome little stormtrooper design.

I might not be a big ET fan, but the exclusive Phone Home Magnet is awesome none the less.

IMG_9482

I enjoyed the latest Mad Max movie a lot, so the Fury Road Comic #1 with exclusive Jim Lee variant cover is nice to get and will be interesting to read.

The product of the month is one of two possible Doctor Who Wacky Wobblers. Looks decent, but as I’ve mentioned before Doctor Who does nothing for me.

IMG_9472

Conclusion

Strong month for Sci-Fi Block overall, with great quality and impressive variety in both properties and type of items. This may actually have been the best single box of any version I’ve received. I have one more Sci-Fi block in my subscription, and am looking forward to it a great deal now.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Volume 3 Review

This is a complete story in a single volume and no previous volumes are needed to understand what’s going on. However it is quite uniquely steeped in the established Phoenix Wright atmosphere with known characters, so familiarity with the video games at least is recommended.

pw3

Phoenix is dragged by Maya to an afternoon of fortune telling, but of course their palm readings and ice cream fortune telling is interrupted by an unforetold murder.

This is a decent little mystery wrapped up in the expected absurd and irreverent hijinks. A bit contrived, but it still holds together well and has some clever touches. I picked this specific volume because of Franziska’s involvement, and her interactions with Wright are amusing as always.

This was exactly what I expected and wanted from a PW manga: equal parts mystery and silliness and just plain fun overall.

Chibi Vampire Volume 14 Review

This is the final volume of Chibi Vampire and the culmination of several long running story threads. No point in starting here: read from the beginning.

This review will include some general thoughts on the whole series and will be as spoiler free as I can make it.

cvvol14

Things get worse and worse for Karin as Chibi Vampire builds to its conclusion. A ton of previously established plot points weave together into an appropriate crescendo. Though a romance at its core, Chibi Vampire has used its premise, characters, and supernatural elements to provide good comedic and tense/dramatic moments as well. Events and complications were appropriately character driven, allowing the story to unfold naturally and engage the readers. Karin’s coming of age story as a person who doesn’t fit into either of the two worlds she shares has remained compelling throughout its 14 volume journey.

I understand why some readers don’t like a certain part of the end, but my view is that people (and thus characters) aren’t and don’t have to be perfect. The choices the characters made were logical, both rationally and emotionally, even if they might of might not have been the best ones that could have been made. The difficulty and possible fallibility of having to make emotionally weighted decisions actually makes everything feel more real for me, even if I don’t necessarily agree with the choice.

This final volume does feel a little rushed, and admittedly could’ve benefited from some more details in certain places. But it still manages to address the important themes of the series and close out all major outstanding plot points.

Overall Chibi Vampire is a wonderful series that takes a comical and absurd concept and turns it into a cute, emotionally charged journey for its characters. Not perfect, but great stuff regardless.

Colorful Review

A recently departed soul is stopped on the way to what lies beyond and is given an opportunity for reformation. The soul wakes up in the body of suicide victim Makoto and must use its existence in Makoto’s life to remember the secret of the great sin it committed in its previous life and to determine why Makoto committed suicide.

Colorful-movie

Colorful is a deep, thought-provoking work of art that examines several of the difficult truths of life via the details of everyday, mundane existence. The characters are more tragic for how genuine and flawed they seem, and realistic struggles are given clarity through the lens of “Makoto”‘s supernatural situation. The lasting effect of past mistakes is merely one of the important themes layered throughout. This was hard to watch in parts, but all the more powerful and real for it.

The animation is incredible and every bit the equal to the story. The backgrounds evoke Japan wonderfully and shine particularly during the countryside scenes. The characters match the style perfectly and are suitably expressive in facial expressions, body language, etc.

Colorful is a fantastic movie and it’s heart-wrenching, perceptive narrative well worth experiencing for yourself.

Shimmer 80 ippv Live Thoughts

April 2, 2016 in Dallas, TX

Big show for Shimmer as they crown their first Heart of Shimmer Champion, a secondary title being introduced on this show in a 12-woman tournament.

shimmer80

First round match: Leva Bates vs Cheerleader Melissa.

Leva out in Kingdom Hearts Sora cosplay. Leva calls the fans the true heart of Shimmer. This was fine, but they didn’t mesh particularly well and there were awkward exchanges. Leva also never felt like she really had a chance. On the plus side – Kudo Driver.

First round match: Candice LeRae vs. Cherry Bomb

Nice to see Cherry back from injury. Candice on fire to start, and wakes the crowd up with a dive to the outside. Cherry takes over with a kick and screams at Candice to strong crowd reaction. Good back and forth match, with Candice advancing with a quick crucifix after Cherry hit her with a Death Valley Driver. This should have opened the show.

First round match: Lufisto vs Nicole Savoy.

Savoy gets right into Lufisto’s face during the intros, and kicks at her hand when offered a handshake. I adore Savoy. They light into each other with strikes and it’s a million miles an hour already. Savoy gets the advantage and is all over Lufisto. Lufisto responds in kind once she’s able to take over. Nicole eventual traps Lufisto… and makes her tap!!! Great match and a nice surprise. I was sure Lufisto would be in the finals. With Lufisto gone Savoy is the favorite to win I think, although not entirely sure a heel will take it.

First round match: Kimber Lee vs Jessica Havok.

Rematch from the last set of tapings. Lee looking good finding ways to deal with Havok’s size. Continues throughout the match, as Havok uses her size and power to press the advantage, and Lee counters with strikes and holds. Havok gets the stretch muffler, but Cherry out for the distraction and Lee wins with a rollup. Interesting. Dave usually keeps the face/heel balance in matchups, but we’ve got Savoy/Lee in the second round. Good match.

First round match: Heidi Lovelace vs Veda Scott.

Veda cheating at every opportunity like a good heel should. Nice spot on the outside where Heidi pulls Veda off the barricade and kicks her in face. Split crowd. Started slow and basic but picked up a lot as the match went. Heidi wins with a big senton off the top. Veda gets an ovation after the match, but says she still hates the audience like a good heel should.

First round match:  Nicole Matthews vs Crazy Mary Dobson.

Interesting match, as Mary upset former Shimmer champion Saraya Knight at the last taped show.  Was disappointed when this match was announced. A loss here and Mary’s momentum from upsetting Knight is gone. Yet back to back wins over former champs and she’d pretty much have to take the tourney. Decent match with Mary playing the underdog and Matthews getting the expected win. Bit of a waste.

Semi-final match: Candice Lerae vs Cheerleader Melissa.

Candice dives onto Melissa during her entrance, skipping ring intros. Melissa takes over and destroys Candice with her signature wheelbarrow swing into the guardrail repeatedly. This got intense down the stretch, with Candice shaking off numerous double stomps to hits multiple of her signature “boxplexes” to upset Melissa. Hard hitting battle with a definitive finish over a two time Shimmer champ to really establish Candice as a contender.

Semi-final match: Kimber Lee vs Nicole Savoy.

Cherry Bomb’s sent to the back immediately, upsetting the tag champs. Both stay in character, leading to an interesting dynamic, but Savoy is the crowd favorite. Good showing for Lee, but Savoy is too much for her and wins with her second submission victory of the evening. Savoy’s looking like a world beater.

Semi-final match: Heidi Lovelace vs Nicole Matthews.

Another good match with Heidi defeating the former champ and ending Matthews’ triple crown quest with the senton she beat Mary with. I like that all three finalists were made to look extremely strong going into the deciding match, and Heidi’s senton now already has credibility as a finish.

The interview segment with Shayna Baszler fell kind of flat. She was fine explaining her qualifications and talking about bringing catch wrestling style back to pro-wrestling, but she just kind of threw out the fact that she’ll be wrestling at Shimmer 81 as an aside at the end. Didn’t come across as the big announcement it should have been.

Final elimination match: Candice Lerae vs Nicole Savoy vs Heidi Lovelace.

Excellent final and a fitting end to the tournament. Heidi powered out of the ring early on and after some good exchanges Savoy eliminated Candice in pretty quick fashion. Heidi and Nicole have good chemistry, and the end portion of the match was exciting. Savoy kicked out Heidi’s new senton finish at one point in a big near fall.

One misstep as Savoy locked in the submission she beat Lufisto with and Heidi looked around for the ropes without selling pain at all. I understand she should be trying to escape, but scream or something while doing so when both arms are supposedly being pulled near out of their sockets. Savoy later locks in the cross arm breaker (which she beat Lee with) for the win and the championship. Dominating tournament for Savoy, much to my delight.

Overall

Great effort from all involved and good wrestling up and down the card. Savoy is the perfect choice to showcase the new title and it gives the spotlight to a deserving up and coming star.
